Ecosystem role

How this step supports the Cokoon model.

Practical mushroom cultivation training is the foundation of the Cokoon ecosystem. The programme is designed for aspiring farmers, existing growers, entrepreneurs, women’s groups, self-help groups, cooperatives, institutions, and anyone interested in starting a sustainable mushroom-based enterprise.

The training provides participants with practical knowledge of the complete cultivation process—from selecting the right mushroom variety and preparing the growing medium to managing hygiene, temperature, humidity, harvesting, and post-harvest handling. Participants also learn how to identify and prevent common contamination, improve productivity, maintain consistent quality, and reduce avoidable crop losses.

This stage strengthens the capability and confidence of growers before they enter commercial production. By following standardised cultivation practices, trained farmers can produce mushrooms that meet Cokoon’s expectations for freshness, safety, quality, and consistency.

Training also prepares participants to understand production planning, basic costing, market demand, packaging requirements, and the importance of timely harvesting and supply. This helps growers move beyond small-scale cultivation and develop mushroom farming as a reliable income-generating activity.

Within the larger Cokoon model, training connects farmer capability with market readiness. Farmers receive the knowledge and practical support required to cultivate successfully, while Cokoon helps strengthen the remaining stages of the value chain through access to cultivation inputs, technical guidance, procurement support, processing, value addition, branding, and marketing.

By building a network of skilled and quality-conscious growers, Cokoon creates a dependable supply of fresh mushrooms for consumers and raw materials for value-added products. This integrated training-to-market approach reduces uncertainty for farmers, improves product quality, supports local entrepreneurship, and contributes to the long-term growth of a sustainable mushroom economy.
